What to Write on a Sympathy Card

By Justin Musgrove

The card that goes with sympathy flowers doesn’t need to be long — ours hold about 250 characters — and it doesn’t need to be perfect. It just needs to sound like you.

A few to start from

  • With love and deepest sympathy. We are holding you close.
  • Thinking of you and your family, and remembering [name] with so much love.
  • [Name] made every room brighter. We are so sorry, and we are here for you.
  • There are no words — only love. With you in spirit today and always.
  • From all of us at [company]: our heartfelt condolences to you and your family.
  • Celebrating a beautiful life and holding your family in our hearts.

If you knew them well

Share one specific memory — the way they laughed, a meal they made, something they taught you. Families often keep these cards, and a small, true detail means more than any phrase.

What to skip

Avoid explaining the loss (“everything happens for a reason”) or comparing it to your own. Simple and warm is always enough.

When you order sympathy flowers from us, there’s a card message box at checkout — type your note there, and we’ll write it out by hand.
